Best Places to Eat in Athens

Who doesn't love greek food?

Roof gardens galore this ancient city has some beautiful places to eat. Upon my trip to Athens I instantly fell in love with the food.

Now when I rate food places I take into consideration a range of factors. The location (view/accessibility), service, taste and presentation and it's safe to say each of these places pass the test!

When we visited in Late March we were fortunate enough to not have to reserve a table however as it creeps up to summer it's safer to book and secure your reservation instead of chancing it!

So, let me increase your appetite and introduce you to the best places to eat/ drink in Athens!

A for athens isn’t really a restaurant it's more of a casual bar with long 'wagamumma' style tables but it passes the test based on the view and location! Situated in the heart of Monastiraki square this is the perfect place to grab a drink after a long day of sightseeing - with a welcoming atmosphere and a variety of warm/cold drinks you can kick up your feet and relax letting the view sink in!

Next door is MS roof garden with a range of cocktails and diverse platters of food this is a popular destination. However bear in mind this eatery is also incredibly popular with the locals so make sure to book in advance! The views are stunning and the prices are reasonably charged based on the dishes served.

In the heart of the square is one of my absolute favourite greek discoveries. Open for hundreds of years this one truly has passed the test of time! Delicious and cheap if I could have eaten here every day I would have! This tavern sells traditional greek food, best of all it can be eaten on the go, perfect if you’re in a hurry and wanting to explore the city vast treasures!

Next up is Ciel a warm favourite of mine! With quirky decor and the option of indoor and outdoor seating both floors offer stunning scenery. We decided to go here for brunch one morning after stumbling across it and my goodness are we glad we discovered it! The brunch menu offers something for everyone.

From waffles to smoked salmon, to bowls of eggs, chips and whipped feta you are sure to fall in love with this restaurant.

Best of all it's brunch menu is open all day!

(Top tip: from Ciel it's only a ten minute walk to the acropolis so if you're an early bird sightseer (like I am) and want to head to the top of the acropolis as soon as it opens to avoid the crowds, make sure you book Ciel to relax in after on your way down.

Sit by the window and watch the passers by as the make their own journey to the top).

Finally, one of my all time favourites Orizontes is an absolute gem!

Situated on the top of Mount Lycabbetus this restaurant is simply amazing! The food is delicious and served beautifully so.

A high end eatery this restaurant is a rewarding treat.

After hearing about it I was encouraged to walk the whole way up Mount Lycabbetus and my goodness am I glad we did! The walk itself is beautiful especially if you're going for dinner time - time your walk to coincide with the sunset - I promise you it's worth it!

There isn’t a dress code as such, I believe this is as many people dressed up for dinner wouldn’t choose to walk up a mountain! However if you do wish to get dressed up and avoid the walk there’s a handy cable car that will take you literally to the restaurants door! Booking is essential with this restaurant if you hope to get a window seat! Make sure to ask for it when you you book! Furthermore for the food served it's incredibly reasonably priced!

Now if you've made it to the very end then I have a treat for you!

We landed upon an absolute gold mine by complete chance.

The incredible airbnb we stayed in was situated upon an ice cream parlour called Melt .... no word of a lie the ice cream here was incomparable to anything I've tasted before - it truly was from out of space.

And the best thing about it was it was open until 12am (even 1am some nights!) .... roll on the midnight snacks. So of course me being me every single night before bed we had to grab ice cream.... all we had to do was walk down the apartment stairs (it was like having our own personal Gelateria), we became such regulars that we made good friends with the staff who let us sample all the different flavours each night!

Top Tip: Get the Dark Chocolate and Banana ice cream AND the Apple Pie ice cream - both are to die for!
